Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common types of anemia. It occurs due to the body's insufficient iron levels, which lead to inadequate synthesis of hemoglobin in erythrocyte. This results in a reduced number of erythrocyte, changes in their shape, smaller size, lighter color, and impaired function with a shortened lifespan. Consequently, the body cannot efficiently carry and transport oxygen, causing symptoms of anemia due to hypoxia. Iron supplements are medications used to treat iron deficiency anemia and are available in two forms: oral and intravenous injection. Intravenous iron supplements include low-molecular-weight iron dextran, ferric carboxymaltose, and iron sucrose.
